About Düsseldorf

Bustling Rhine metropolis in the heart of Europe

Nestled in the very heart of Europe, Düsseldorf is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. With a population of 600,000, this bustling German city is a mixture of modern and traditional.

The old town, known in German as the Altstadt, features historic breweries, riverside bars and fine food restaurants, while contemporary architecture, such as Frank Gehry’s Media Harbour, is easy to spot across the city. Düsseldorf is famous for its Königsallee (known to locals as Kö) – a flamboyant mile of luxurious boulevards. Another place to be is the new embankment promenade under the 180-metre Rhine tower. Poet Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) is Düsseldorf’s most famous local and his birthplace in the Altstadt is now a centre for literature.

Düsseldorf also boasts the biggest Japanese community in Germany, so eating sushi is recommended.

The Rhine runs alongside the city. To the north, you will find the ruins of Emperor Barbarossa's medieval castle next to the river and to the south there is a wonderful baroque castle featuring a spacious park with English- and French-themed gardens.

Düsseldorf’s central location and its airport and railway station make getting away for the weekend easy. Within this green city, walking, cycling and public transport routes are accessible and convenient.
