DESCRIPTION

The Alexa Personal Mobility team provides voice experiences such as directions/navigation to Points of Interest (POIs) and addresses, daily commute information including delays, incidents, and expected time of arrival, and searching and finding establishments for Alexa’s customers via the Echo Auto and directly integrated with the car, as well as in the Echo and Echo Show devices.

As an Applied Scientist, you will work with talented peers to develop novel algorithms and modeling techniques to advance the state of the art in spoken language understanding and search. Your work will directly impact our customers in the form of novel products and services that make use of speech and language technology. You will leverage Amazon’s heterogeneous data sources and large-scale computing resources to accelerate advances in spoken language understanding. You will mentor junior scientists, create and drive new initiatives.

Additional responsibilities include:

- Perform hands-on data analysis and modeling with large data sets to develop insights that increase device usage and customer experience

- Run A/B experiments, evaluate the impact of your optimizations and communicate your results to various business stakeholders

- Apply machine learning and data mining techniques to improve our conversational interfaces and search algorithms

- Work closely with product managers and software engineers to design experiments and implement end-to-end solutions

- Setup and monitor alarms to detect anomalous data patterns and perform root cause analyses to explain and address them

- Be a member of the Amazon-wide Machine Learning Community, participating in internal and external MeetUps, Hackathons and Conferences

- Help attract and recruit technical talent

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

· PhD degree with 4 years of applied research experience or a Masters degree and 6+ years of experience of applied research experience
· 3+ years of experience of building machine learning models for business application
· Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

· Ph.D. in Computer Science, Language Science, Computational Mathematics, Statistics, or related field
· Excellent verbal/written communication skills, including an ability to effectively collaborate with research and technical teams, and earn the trust and influence senior stakeholders
· Track record of communicating well with software engineers and non-technical leaders
· Experience with at least one of the modern distributed ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, MxNet
· Experience with Big Data SQL (such as Hive or Spark)
· Experience performing and interpreting A/B experiments
· Experience with NLP algorithms and tools
