Among the goals of the Alexa AI team is to make Alexa the most knowledgeable and trusted source of local information to enable customers to find places, products, or services around them, ask detailed questions about what they find, and provide personalized travel, commute, and navigation experiences to the places they find.

As a Research Scientist with Alexa AI, you will be responsible for data-driven improvements to our Natural Language Understanding models for multiple languages. Your work will directly impact the experience and engagement of customers who rely on Alexa to find relevant locations while in-the-car, on-the-go and at-home.

In this role you will:
· Perform hands-on data analysis and modeling with large data sets to develop insights that increase device usage and customer experience
· Run A/B experiments, evaluate the impact of your optimizations and communicate your results to various business stakeholders
· Apply Machine Learning and SLU techniques to improve our conversational interfaces
· Clean, analyze and select speech/language data to build and release language understanding models that elevate the customer experience
· Work closely with product managers and software engineers to design experiments and implement end-to-end solutions
· Collaborate with colleagues from science, engineering and business backgrounds.
· Present proposals and results in a clear manner backed by data and coupled with actionable conclusions
· Be a member of the Amazon-wide Machine Learning Community, participating in internal and external Meet-Ups, Hackathons and Conferences
· Help attract and recruit technical talent


· PhD or equivalent Master's degree plus 4+ years of research experience in a quantitative field
· Experience investigating the feasibility of applying scientific principals and concepts to business problems and products
· 1+ yrs. experience in Java, Python, or another scripting language; command line usage
· 1+ yrs. experience with machine learning techniques and parameters that affect their performance


· Ph.D. in Computational Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or any related field
· 2+ years of experience of building machine learning models for business application
· 2+ years experience with a statistical modeling tools
· Expertise on a broad set of ML approaches and techniques including Deep Learning
· Experience with at least one of the modern distributed ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, MxNet
· Experience with Deep Learning and NLP algorithms for language understanding
· Excellent verbal/written communication skills, including an ability to effectively collaborate with research and technical teams
· Experience performing and interpreting A/B experiments
· Comfortable with ambiguous problems, collaborative and fast moving work environment
