Software Development Manager , Embedded Linux

Job summary
You will drive the engineering effort that delivers to customers the mechanisms used to deliver AWS device software to Embedded Linux faster than ever before. The automation software, Continuous Integration, and quality mechanisms provided by the meta-aws project ( directly helps customers build, install, and run device software on custom Linux distributions using OpenEmbedded, Yocto Project, and Automotive Grade Linux.

We are looking for a software development manager who is passionate about delivering open source software to customers and partners building solutions on Embedded Linux. The ideal candidate for this role is someone who has led development efforts that include staff engineers as well as contributors from the open source community and has demonstrated the capacity to facilitate both contexts effectively. The meta-aws project provides recipes for AWS device software ranging from Software Development Kits to machine learning runtimes to fully operational platforms such as AWS IoT Greengrass.

Key job responsibilities
· Build strong engineering team that can effectively deliver the right solutions to customers.
· Insist highest standards on quality, maintainability, and operational excellence.
· Build relationships and trust with open source engineers through open community engagement
· Collaborate across AWS engineering teams for features to increase and improve AWS device software delivery.
· Manage and execute against project plans and delivery commitments.
· Build effective mechanisms to improve team processes and engineering best practices.
· Hire and grow talent.
· Work closely with engineers to architect and develop the best technical design.
· Develop team’s long term strategy and translate that into an achievable road map/action plan.

A day in the life
Every day meets at an intersection internal and open source development.

Part of the day is spent managing engineering activities that relate to future launches of AWS device software so capabilities can be provides simultaneously with the device software launch.

The other part of the day is managing open source operations, guiding the team in managing public repository issues and pull requests, running sprints and daily standups, and interacting with open source projects to ensure bilateral cooperation.

About the team

The team includes roles across systems engineering and software engineering. The engineers focus on outcomes for embedded system designer and embedded engineer personas.

· 7+ years of experience working directly within engineering teams
· Experience partnering with product OR program management teams
· 3+ years of people management experience, managing engineers
· 3+ years of experience architecting and designing (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems
· 3+ years Embedded Linux (OpenEmbedded, Yocto Project, Automotive Grade Linux)
· 3+ years leading open source projects or leading expert groups in larger open source projects


· Building large-scale continuous integration and continuous deliver (CI/CD) systems.
· Hands-on systems programming experience. Active systems programming skills desired.
