The Alexa Natural Language Understanding team is seeking a talented, self-directed Applied Science Manager to join the team owning a wide array of highly impactful Natural Language Understanding (NLU) applications in many languages, providing thousands of customers the ability to interact with Alexa in the most natural way possible.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Management of Research and Applied Scientists
  • Providing technical and scientific guidance to the team
  • Strategic planning for scientific projects
  • Driving successful completion of scientific projects
  • Inculcate a culture of scientific thinking, exploring emerging technologies and advancing the state of the art in Natural Language Understanding
  • Develop collaborations with other science teams both within Amazon and externally (academic collaboration)
  • Identify emerging trends in Science and its applicability to Alexa
  • Publish research papers in venues of repute; Conduct workshops, challenges in area of NLU

  • Able to communicate effectively with senior management as well as with colleagues from science, engineering and business backgrounds; Ability to author well written documents


  • Masters in computer science, Data Sciences, statistics, machine learning or a related field
  • 8+ years work experience in machine learning and applied data sciences
  • 4+ years of work experience managing science and software teams
  • Expertise in machine learning and in particular deep neural networks
  • Understanding of relevant statistical measures such as confidence intervals, significance of error measurements, development and evaluation data sets, etc.
  • Research papers published in AI/ML venues of repute; part of program committee of conferences; co-organized workshops/challenges
  • Has excellent English written and verbal communication


  • Ph.D. in computer science, data sciences, statistics, machine learning or a related field
  • Past experience in Natural Language Processing through machine learning
  • Hands-on experience in programming and machine learning
  • Proven track record of exceptional level of organizational skills and strong attention to detail
  • Comfortable working in a fast paced, highly collaborative, dynamic work environment
  • Ability to think creatively and solve problems
