This role will directly contribute to developing the Economics and Science products and services in the Fee domain. Through the lens of economics, you will develop causal links for how Amazon, Sellers and Customers interact. You will be the key leader providing thought leadership, advising Amazon senior leaders how to price our services. You will work on developing frameworks and scaleable, repeatable models supporting optimal pricing and policy in the two-sided marketplace that drives the Amazon marketplace flywheel. The pricing for Amazon services is complex and opaque – over monetization will lead to Sellers’ attrition, under monetization will lead to an unsustainable business model. You will partner with most Econ teams in Amazon including Advertising, Supply Chain, Operations, Prime, Consumer Pricing, and Finance.
We are looking for an experienced Senior Principal Economist to improve our understanding of seller Economics, enhance our ability to estimate the causal impact of fees, and work with partner teams to recommend policy changes. In this role, you will provide guidance to scientists to develop structural econometric models to influence our fee pricing worldwide. You will lead the development of causal models to help isolate the impact of fee and policy changes from other business actions, using experiments when possible, or observational data when not.
Key job responsibilities
The ideal candidate will have outstanding Economics knowledge, demonstrated strength in practical and policy relevant structural econometrics, strong collaboration skills, proven ability to lead highly ambiguous and large projects, and an innate drive to deliver results.
They will work closely with Economists, Data / Applied Scientists, Strategy Analysts, Data Engineers, and Product leads to integrate economic insights into production and inform policy. Familiarity with software engineering and working with Software Developers is a plus.

The Selling Partner Fees team owns the end-to-end fees experience for all third-party sellers WW. We develop monetization strategies, Economics and Science models, and software that accurately charge Sellers the lowest fees while optimizing long-term Amazon growth; thereby allowing Sellers to offer Customers the Earth’s largest selection at competitive prices. Our systems empower Amazon teams to launch and change fees in a manner that builds Seller trust, ensuring every transaction is accurately calculated and transparent. The Fee domain includes Fee Strategy, Seller Experience, Seller Economics, ML, Data Science and Analytics, payments accuracy and integrity, and provides scalable technology to monetize Amazon’s services available to third-party sellers, which will account for $100B+ WW Consumer Gross Merchandise Sales.

- PhD in Economics, Computer Science, or highly related field (Statistics, Finance, Math)
- 15+ years of experience in industry, consulting, government, or academic research
- Experience with big data and machine learning or data science
- Coding ability in a scripting language such as R or python or STATA
- Strong research track record, drives results

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $240,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $350,000/year in our highest geographic market.
