Job ID: 2655146 | Services LLC

AWS Applications and Higher Level Abstractions (Apps) provides horizontal and industry vertical applications for business users with the same on-demand scalability, reliability, pay-as-you-go pricing, and machine learning expertise that drive AWS services. The AWS Applications group includes services such as Amazon Connect (a cost-effective cloud contact center), our End User Computing (including Amazon Workspaces, AppStream, etc.), Marketing Tech (Amazon Pinpoint), and Autonomous Checkout and Identity Services (Just Walk Out, Amazon One) for retail, sports, travel, and other verticals.

AWS Dash Cart is a new smart shopping cart that makes grocery trips quick and safe by allowing shoppers to skip the checkout line. Our team continually looks for ways to seamlessly utilize new technology to improve the shopping experience.

AWS Dash cart allows shoppers to checkout without lines — you just place the items in the cart and the cart will take care of the rest. When you’re done shopping, you leave the store through a designated dash lane. We charge the payment method in your Amazon account as you walk through the dash lane and send you a receipt. Designed and custom-built by Amazonians, our Dash cart uses a variety of technologies including computer vision, sensor fusion, and advanced machine learning. Check it out at

Innovation is part of our DNA! Our goal is to be Earth’s most customer centric company and we are just getting started. We need people who want to join an ambitious program that continues to push the state of the art in computer vision, machine learning, distributed systems and hardware design.

We are looking for a passionate, experience software development engineer to join our team and help us re-imagine how to drive innovation, long-term plan and efficiency through our product lifecycle. You are expected to have industry-leading technical abilities that enable you to significantly improve product quality, and a deep curiosity to dive into new technologies. The SDE would work across software, hardware, cloud, algorithms, and computer vision, helping us to deliver exciting new lovable products to market.

The ideal candidate will also have demonstrated ability to lead broad, cross-functional activities beyond software development. You will invent and deliver on key projects that directly impacts our end customer experience. You'll develop your team of highly motivated and talented builders who can collaborate with product managers, technical specialists, and principals across the company.

You should be comfortable with a degree of ambiguity that’s higher than most projects, and relish the idea of solving problems that, frankly, haven’t been solved at scale before - anywhere. You will encounter challenging, novel situations every day and given the size of this initiative, you’ll have the opportunity to work with multiple technical teams at Amazon in different locations. We’re looking for entrepreneurs who are passionate about innovating on behalf of customers, can demonstrate a high degree of ownership, and want to have fun while they make history and craft beautiful products.

Key job responsibilities
A SDE II implements solutions for complex problems that are unique to smart grocery carts, and are rarely encountered in the traditional embedded world. The SDE II owns design, implementation and operation of embedded software that runs on the device plus corresponding cloud side services in AWS.

A day in the life
A typical day may start with a few hours of writing code in Python/Rust/Bash, followed by standup. In the afternoon: drafting of a design for Linux device management or white-boarding sessions on a scalable system design.

About the team
We are building a team within the Dash Cart embedded software organization, composed of a diverse set of engineers tasked with solving unique challenges that apply to manufacturing, bring-up, management and deployment of software + AI models to fleets of high powered IoT edge computes.

Diverse Experiences
Amazon values diverse experiences. Even if you do not meet all of the preferred qualifications and skills listed in the job description, we encourage candidates to apply. If your career is just starting, hasn’t followed a traditional path, or includes alternative experiences, don’t let it stop you from applying.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform. We pioneered cloud computing and never stopped innovating — that’s why customers from the most successful startups to Global 500 companies trust our robust suite of products and services to power their businesses.

We value work-life harmony. Achieving success at work should never come at the expense of sacrifices at home, which is why flexible work hours and arrangements are part of our culture. When we feel supported in the workplace and at home, there’s nothing we can’t achieve in the cloud.

Inclusive Team Culture
Here at AWS, it’s in our nature to learn and be curious. Our employee-led affinity groups foster a culture of inclusion that empower us to be proud of our differences. Ongoing events and learning experiences, including our Conversations on Race and Ethnicity (CORE) and AmazeCon (gender diversity) conferences, inspire us to never stop embracing our uniqueness.
