Voices of Amazon Ads

My role is to support the international expansion and product strategy of the Prime Video display advertising business. I most enjoy the opportunity to influence and experience Amazon’s ability to invent and scale.

Something that might surprise people about Amazon is that despite the company’s size, teams are really self-sufficient. You’ll find a lot of different tools and processes across organizations, because teams have independence to determine their own best practices. However, Amazon’s Leadership Principles ground everyone around a common set of values. It’s pretty fascinating to work at a company with such a defined and ingrained culture.

I head the product for podcast addressability and AI at Amazon Ads. The tech space—particularly adtech—has evolved significantly since I started in the industry, and Amazon plays a pivotal role in this landscape.

I’ve worked at other large companies and was expecting something similar here, but the culture is very different. One of the things that surprised me was the principle of ‘Disagree and Commit’. At Amazon, with any decision that needs to be made, we have a healthy debate, data is used, pros and cons are discussed, and at the end of the meeting, there’s a decision on next steps.

What’s different is even if you’re not aligned with that decision, you commit to go with it and wholeheartedly support. This feels unique to Amazon. I’ve had discussions after meetings with my colleagues who disagreed. But once we made a decision, they were the first ones to reach out and say, “Hey, how can we help you drive that forward?” It means we can all progress as one to build better solutions for our customers.
