Featured Speakers:

Ahmed Abdalla, Alexa Machine Learning Platform Engineering Manager: Ahmed is a software guy who loves building teams and delivering product that makes the world better. He has an engineering background with degrees from BU and GATech and has been in industry since 2001. He started as a developer and team lead at The Mathworks where he designed and implemented core UI infrastructure for Simulink, which is used by millions of engineers to design and develop mission critical systems. In 2010, he took the startup plunge and joined Pubget as VP of Engineering where his team helped hundreds of thousands of scientists find papers fast. He then moved to Skillz in 2013 to become Head of Development where his team delivered the world's first cash tournament system for mobile. He joined Amazon in 2014 as an engineering leader in the machine learning platform powering Alexa speech technology.

Chao Wang, Alexa Machine Learning Science Manager: Chao received her doctoral degree in 2001 from the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at MIT. She spent the next six years as a Research Scientist at MIT CSAIL working on Spoken Dialogue Systems, Machine Translation, and Computer Aided Language Learning research. In 2007, she joined startup company Vlingo and led a small team of speech scientists in developing Mobile Voice Interfaces in near 20 languages. After Vlingo was acquired by Nuance in 2012, Chao oversaw the adoption and scaling of the Vlingo NLU technology to power Nuance Mobile Division’s product lines, and she became a Senior Director in Nuance leading a research team focusing on NLU and Dialogue Modeling. Chao is currently a Science Manager at Amazon’s Boston office working on developing Machine Learning technologies for Alexa.

Russell Schwager, Alexa Machine Learning Platform Engineering Manager: Russell is an engineering leader for Amazon’s Machine Learning Platform for Alexa, responsible for ensuring user privacy and security.  Prior to joining Amazon, he was the CTO of M.Gemi where he was responsible for developing the technology roadmap and vision.  Before M.Gemi, Russell was the VP of Engineering at Jumptap (acquired by Millennial Media) and founder of the event registration company, Feemania.  He earned his B.S. degree in Computer Science and Mathematical Sciences from the Johns Hopkins University and a Masters in Engineering degree from Cornell University.

Michael Conti, Alexa Machine Learning Platform Software Engineer: Mike is a University of Maryland, College Park Alumni. He received his degree in Computer Science in 2013 and has been a Software Development Engineer on the Alexa Machine Learning Platform ever since. Being part of the first team on the Data Platform, Mike has seen Alexa expand quite a bit and was a key player in founding new teams. Currently, he is on the newest team of the platform, working on a centralized permissioning system. Prior to that, he developed a flexible automated dataset generation framework which is a major component in the Alexa model building pipeline. This framework quickly grew in popularity, which led him to produce an internal publication with his team, and give a tech talk at the Amazon Machine Learning Conference in May 2017.
