Earth’s local bookseller
Book Depository is a subsidiary of Amazon whose vision is to get 'All Books To All'. We offer more than 20 million titles with free shipping worldwide. Our tech teams develop and maintain all aspects of eCommerce that power our business: from vendor on-boarding and catalog management, to listing and selling across channels (including www.bookdepository.com). We even develop the automation that runs our warehouse!
As an SDE in BD Tech, you are exposed to a broad spectrum of technologies and architectures, from traditional LAMP-stack to Java and AWS-based micro-services across a range of business domains. We embrace new technologies and are constantly seeking new ways to innovate for our customers. We have the ability - and the responsibility - to evaluate external technology as an equal option to internal technology and choose what is best for us. This enables us to be always in sync with the industry trends and technologies and allows us to build skills that are long-lasting.
We are passionate about our people and have a highly collaborative culture, with team-building events and hackathons planned throughout the year. We take pride in our diversity, too, with engineers from 12 nationalities. If you are passionate about technology and are interested in building world-class software with all the available resources of Amazon, whilst working for a company with a start-up mentality, then Book Depository Tech may well be the place for you!
Our teams are based in London and Madrid.
We are an international team of full stack engineers whose systems power the www.bookdepository.com website. We solve truly global problems on behalf of our millions of customers worldwide. We own the shopping experience from ‘browse’ through to ‘buy’. We readily experiment with technology and are ambitious in our goals. In 2020, for example, we are re-building our Checkout and Payment stack using AWS, Java and React. If you get excited by building customer-facing features accessed by millions around the world, and you like to have fun in the process, then consider joining our team – we’d love to hear from you!
Fulfilment and Analytics Systems Team (FaAST)
FaAST owns and constantly evolves applications that handle the lifecycle of customer orders post-purchase. We own an innovative mix of software and hardware that enables all activities in our warehouses: from goods arriving to parcel shipping and on-ward delivery to over 175 countries worldwide. In the last 3 years, FaAST has replaced legacy systems with AWS and market-leading fulfilment technologies used by Amazon retail. In 2020, we will install new state-of-the-art hardware automation into our warehouses to allow us to process more books and scale our business.
The Selection team’s mission is to make the widest selection of books available (physical, e-books or audio-books) at the best price. We own book bibliographical, visual, pricing and availability information which is geolocalized, consumed and published in real time. We provide book search and autocomplete features to enable our customers to find their books on www.bookdepository.com. We also own our email marketing platform, which helps us suggest books to our customers that are personalized to them. If your passion is solving hard low-latency issues and dealing with large amounts of data we would love hearing from you.
We are the biggest third-party media seller in Amazon, present in 16 marketplaces with an inventory of 19MM books per market. Our systems list, price and maintain this inventory. We are moving to an event-based architecture that will allow us to react in near real-time to changing price & stock availability – giving our customers the best possible price. We also own Book Depository’s data warehouse, which our business intelligence team use to analyse business performance. Our system gets 140 million updates a day! If you insist on the highest of the standards, if you get excited by building new and creative solutions for complex problems and if you'd like to work with a diverse and fun group of people, then join our team.
