Edinburgh

What's good to know

Edinburgh has a rare balance of being a thriving capital surrounded by the coast and vast green spaces (including an extinct volcano right in the heart of the city!) so has something for all tastes, lifestyles and ages. The Medieval Old Town and Georgian New Town districts were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1995. In more recent years, Edinburgh has become the second biggest financial centre in the United Kingdom and the city attracts over a million overseas visitors a year, making it the second most visited tourist destination in the UK. The city also hosts the world famous annual Edinburgh Festival, a group of official and independent festivals held annually over about four weeks beginning in early August. The best-known of these events is the Edinburgh Fringe, the largest performing-arts festival in the world where many world famous comedians and performers started their careers and still perform today.

Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland, seat of the Scottish Parliament and Scottish seat of the UK monarch. In the 2019 mid-year population estimates, Edinburgh council area had a total resident population of 518,500. Edinburgh has frequently been named as one of the best and most sustainable cities in the world and in 2020 the historic port area of Leith was named the best place to live in Scotland. Edinburgh has a rich history of leading in education and research, particularly in the fields of science, engineering and medicine.
