Leader, HR Technology Programs
For most customers, shopping on Amazon.com is frustration-free. Amanda P., an HR Technology Programs Leader, was hired to make applying for a job at Amazon just as easy.
“Three and a half years ago I was brought in to evaluate Amazon’s high-volume hiring platform, which included fulfillment center and customer service associates” explained Amanda. “We had fulfillment centers that were more than 1 million square feet, and we needed to fully staff the buildings in 60 days. Our old hiring tools were breaching their limits.” Amanda and her team built a brand-new internal tool that greatly reduced the amount of administrative processing time to hire associates. “The best compliment you can have as an engineer is knowing people are using what you built,” said Amanda. This hiring system helped hire over tens of thousands associates around the world just last year.
Now, Amanda is on the People Technology team. Amanda says, “I stay at Amazon because of the near instant job satisfaction on a daily basis and the velocity to deliver,” she said. Amanda’s college degree was in HR, and her previous work experience was in technology, but her current role in People Technology is still very much an uncharted adventure – Amanda is currently working on scaling Amazon’s rapid growth. Massive challenges don’t intimidate Amanda, they excite her. “There is a healthy appetite for experimentation here,” she explained. “We get to build and play with the most cutting edge technology to solve our problems.”
Recently, an Amazon candidate told Amanda, ‘I want to build a robot, and I feel like Amazon is the place where I could do that.’ Amanda hasn’t had the chance to build a robot just yet, but since she does get to innovate, experiment, and invent every day, she was confident in telling that candidate: “If you want to build a robot, Amazon is definitely the place to build a robot."
