Celebrating the global mosaic of Hispanic cultures

AWS builders share stories of community and careers

Hispanic Heritage Month honors the cultures and contributions of Hispanic people around the world — and there’s so much to celebrate. At AWS, Hispanic representation spans six continents, and every region has its own heroes, history, cuisines, and traditions. Each person brings their own contributions to the culture, and the same is true at AWS. We asked our builders about their own heritage, their favorite traditions, and their career journeys.

“There are many different flavors of ‘Hispanic,’ and also differences between people who migrated in the 60s and 70s versus the 2000s. We are not a monolithic group of people."

Diego
Vice President of New Products

“Latinidad is a mosaic of identities and experiences. But, at its core, my heritage has been defined by my Puerto Rican family and community. The sounds, the food, the smells, and the traditions are communal. It’s the echo of an island with a rich history.“

Amanda
Inside Account Representative

“English is my first language, but Spanish speaks to my soul.”

Elizabeth
Senior Program Manager

Our history shapes our future

Cultural traditions influence and inform our lives in countless ways. While familiar threads run through many Hispanic communities, the nuances of these traditions can feel entirely unique — for example, Noche Buena is celebrated around the world, yet every family brings its own flavors to this Christmas Eve celebration. These deeply personal traditions continue to resonate with builders across AWS.

“My mother instilled many traditions in our lives growing up. Some of my favorites were eating 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve and banging pots and pans at midnight for good luck on someone’s birthday.“

Natalia
Senior Business Development Manager

"Noche Buena is a Latino tradition that I’ve kept up regardless of where I’ve lived. For many of us, Noche Buena is a time for family, food, and dancing. In reality, we believe it’s a more important holiday than Christmas Day.“

Director, Diversity Recruiting

El sonido de las sonrisas

Music is the soundtrack to our lives, so we asked our builders to share some songs that fill their hearts or move their feet. Check out our Cultura playlist on Amazon Music.

Connecting colleagues across AWS

“My Latino heritage isn’t a hat I put on or take off. It’s an experience I live every day.” Diego’s words are echoed by all of our builders — taking pride in their roots, and at AWS, bringing their whole self to work. Our Latinos at Amazon affinity group connects nearly 7,000 global builders for career development, mentorship, and community, and reviews programs that impact our Hispanic customers. The group also provides a forum for builders to connect and share projects they’re passionate about both at and outside of work.

“I work with Candid Chats, a program that lets new Amazon candidates chat candidly with an employee that represents their culture. I work with candidates who request Latino representation, female representation, or both.”

Natalia

“My Hispanic heritage has impacted my professional life positively. When I’m active in Latinos at Amazon and I’m vocal and passionate about advocating for ID&E, I think it helps others feel empowered to do the same.”

Alanna
Program Manager

“I have served on the VA Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as well as on the Virginia Latino Advisory board. These contacts have enabled me to better ensure that we are serving the needs of the communities in which I live and work.”

Joel
Human Resources Director

"I am proud member of Senoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc., an organization of diverse collegiate and professional women dedicated to uplifting traditionally marginalized groups, specifically Latinx people and women.”

Working together, rising together

At AWS, supporting the Hispanic community includes reaching beyond our walls to build a better future for everyone. We work with the 501(c)3 Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, which provides scholarships to outstanding Hispanic students. We partner with the Hispanic IT Executive Council (HITEC) to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders. Moreover, through our Global Month of Volunteering and GiveHub program, we make it easy for our people to support causes that make an impact in their communities.

Many individuals, one team

AWS is committed to a culture where every builder feels empowered to change the way the world works.

Hiring diverse talent

We’re focused on building a workplace where more people can thrive, including creating more diverse interview panels and candidate loops to ensure that our workforce reflects the world around us and removing gender bias through the hiring process by using “they/them” pronouns to address all candidates.

Expanding horizons

There are countless pathways for career development and growth at AWS. We support our employees' personal and professional growth through a broad range of training, upskilling, and mentorship programs to help you accelerate your career path and discover new directions.

Building community

AWS’s affinity groups are employee-led communities for connecting on common ground, building internal networks, and meeting colleagues who share your interests and experiences. Groups include Latinos at Amazon, the Black Employee Network, Amazon Women in Engineering, and many more.
