How to prepare for your virtual interview

 

Amazon is closely following the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) and implementing processes that promote candidate and employee safety. Out of an abundance of caution, our default process for on-site interviews will now be held virtually via Amazon Chime.

Prior to your virtual interview:

  • Review the Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) your recruiting contact sent to you, and reply with acknowledgement that you agree to the terms.
  • Download Amazon Chime, our video conferencing tool. If you plan to present during your interview you will need to download Chime to your desktop.
  • Test Amazon Chime to ensure it is working correctly on your device.
  • Your recruiting contact will send an Amazon Chime meeting ID# prior to your interview.
  • If a virtual interview via Amazon Chime is not fully accessible for you, please discuss with your recruiting contact so they can offer an accommodation.

On the day of your interview:

  • Conduct your interview in a well-lit and ideally quiet environment that is free of distractions. Given the global shift to work from home and other areas of personal life being impacted, you may have unique circumstances (kids, pets, family members, etc.) in your work area. Rest assured our interview teams are understanding of these situations. We are all in this together.
  • Test your internet connection to ensure it's strong and working.
  • Confirm that your webcam works properly. If you don’t have a headset, be prepared to mute your microphone when you aren’t talking.
  • If you are using a laptop, cellphone, or tablet, fully charge your device prior to the interview.


Troubleshooting:

  • If you experience technical difficulties during your interview, close out and re-enter the Chime bridge.
  • If you still have trouble connecting, dial in from your mobile phone using the toll-free number in the interview invite.
  • Email your recruiting contact immediately if you are unable to connect via phone.


Additional tips:

  • Dress code is comfortable and casual. 
  • If your interview involves technical elements (e.g., coding, design exercise), it may be easier for you to draw your solution and show it to the interviewer. If this is the case with your interview, you have multiple options:
     
     - Use a drawing or diagramming tool on your personal computer, and share that window via Chime.
     - Use a free web-based whiteboarding product, such as the AWW app, and share the web browser’s screen via Chime.
     - Draw on a piece of paper, and show it to the camera when ready.
     
    It may be useful to practice with Chime and your preferred exercise solution in advance of your interview.


FAQs:

Does this change apply to all roles? What if I already have an in-person interview scheduled?
Your recruiter should have reached out to you to confirm if your interview will be virtual. However, if in doubt, reach out to your recruiting contact to confirm the details of your interview.

I was invited to participate in an in-person interview but I would prefer virtual. Is that an option?
Yes. Let your recruiting contact know that you would prefer a virtual interview instead and they will assist you.

Do I need to use video for the interview or can I just dial in via phone?
We ask that you use video for your virtual interview. Let your recruiting contact know if you do not have access to a webcam.

Do you treat virtual interviews the same as onsite interviews?
While the setup is different, we treat virtual interviews the same as in-person.
