About Erfurt
What's good to know
Erfurt is located in the southern part of the Thuringian Basin, in the valley of the Gera river. Together with neighboring cities Gotha, Weimar, Jena and others, Erfurt forms the metropolitan corridor of the German state of Thuringia. Erfurt is 100 km south-west of Leipzig and 300 km south-west of Berlin.
Erfurt is known its Cathedral Square, one of the largest market squares in Europe, and the Kramerbrucke (Merchant’s Bridge) which dates back to 1325 and has been inhabited for over 500 years. Erfurt’s economy is based on agriculture, horticulture and microelectronics. Because it is centrally located, Erfurt has become a logistics hub for central Europe and Germany.
